It’s Hard to be Good

It’s Hard to be Good

Some of life’s biggest lessons can be taught by our children. I was having a conversation with my daughter about proper behavior, and she replied, “But it’s really hard to be good.” I stressed that it’s still important to try our best, to be respectful and have manners. A five year old can only stay “good” for some time, and it is quite difficult to be at her best always…ok, forget always, for ten minutes is more like it. So, when she misbehaves a consequence follows, and she’ll try harder to make better decisions. Until, of course, she gets in trouble again… and again, and perhaps one more time. What she learns however, is that each time she fails, she can try anew. Forgiveness and redemption. And so, I realized that adults do the same. We try to be good, but mess up very easily. Time and time again we commit the same mistakes. A period of reflection, or recovery follows.  We think about our actions and we promise to ourselves to do better. We try and try our best, but damn it, it’s hard to be good. Nonetheless, this might not be actually so bad. I think that sometimes it’s good to be bad. It pushes boundaries, it tests relationships, it wakes up monotony, it provides countless opportunities to grow and advance to a higher self… In all, failure makes us the perfect human being.
